Women in Construction Week 2025! A time to celebrate the talent, ambition, and expertise that women bring to the industry. At PurOptima, we are proud to highlight the incredible women on our team who are shaping the future of construction.

One of those women is Kelley Douglass, our Business Development & Pre-Construction Manager for the Northeast and Midwest.

With 15 years in construction and 12 years specializing in demountable glass walls, Kelley Douglass built a career in technical expertise, problem-solving, and creativity.

We sat down with Kelley to talk about her journey and advice for women considering a career in construction.

Discovering a passion for construction

Did you always imagine yourself working in construction?

“Not exactly! I started my career in contract furniture, working for major manufacturers. Then, I was asked to be part of a new architectural product development initiative. The product focused on interior space and construction, requiring more technical expertise. That intrigued me.”

Sounds like you were drawn in right way! What made construction so exciting for you?

“I absolutely was! I love working with engineers and architects because I learn something new every day. Construction is never the same twice, which keeps it exciting!”

Lessons learned & advice for women in construction

Looking back, what’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

“Spend more time with experts. Take courses, build technical skills, and invest in learning as much as possible.”

Encouraging more women to join the industry

What do you think would help more women step into construction?

“Mentorship is key! We need to recruit from universities and create opportunities for women to learn and grow. Having strong role models makes a difference. When women see others thriving in construction, they’re more likely to pursue it as a career.”

The unique strengths women bring to construction

What unique values and perspectives do you think women bring to the construction sector?

“Many women I meet share a passion for technical details and a genuine excitement for the unique challenges each project brings. We also bring a high degree of empathy for project stakeholders, which helps create strong, successful teams. Authenticity is key.”

Breaking misconceptions & making space for women

What’s a common myth about women in construction that just isn’t true?

“That there’s no room for us. As Shirley Chisholm famously said, ‘If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.’

“I’ve found that when you show you care and do great work, you earn respect. That’s what truly matters.”

A standout project: blending tradition & innovation in NYC

You’ve worked on so many projects, are there any projects that really stand out to you?

“I’ve been lucky to work on many unique and challenging projects, but one of my favorites with PurOptima is in NYC for Sumitomo. The architect designed a client experience center featuring a stunning mix of bespoke details, natural finishes, and warm materials.”

What was a standout feature?

“A literal pagoda in a Midtown Manhattan office! It was incredible to see that vision come to life.”

Celebrating women in construction

Kelley’s story is just one example of how the incredible women at PurOptima are shaping the future of construction.

At PurOptima, we are proud to celebrate the talented women on our team who continue to shape the industry. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career, your contributions are making a difference.
